Socially Cornelius can be best described as a hot mess; since his accident and the savant syndrome developing, he began to isolate himself from society and avoiding large groups and open spaces from that day forth. He can no longer cope with loud noises or hectic crowds like found on public transportation or in social environments like clubs, parties or even a busy restaurant. He’s not shy from conversation as long as it remains in small almost private occasions, one of one or perhaps just in tiny groups like three or four people. Now whenever he’s put in situations of conversation he does however find himself becoming overly scientific with matters, often forgetting the audience that’s listening to him.
Emotionally he’s an even greater mess, a broken man in a way as his head is in shambles and the memories of the past events are all scrambled; he’s often confused and frustrated leading slowly in a downward spiral that may end in depression. He’s got a broken heart with a void that needs filling even though he doesn’t know why; he recalls faces from his past yet fails to meet the name belonging to those individuals. Background:
There’s little to be said about the first sixteen years of Cornelius Bristol’s life in Stamford Connecticut; he was your average boy playing junior league baseball, getting average grades and enjoying the common childhood experience. He pitched for the local junior team showing some promise for the sport though the ambition was missing to truly excel at it; he participated in the school’s science fair but never won any prizes with his ideas making Cornelius just another kid attending classes. There was truly nothing to special to mention about the Bristol’s who lived a pleasant life well within their means, going on their annual family holidays in the summer, going skiing in the winter while the occasional hike was made to family bond. Cornelius was the middle child giving him some rivalry with his older brother Lucas while being slightly protective of his younger sister Jennifer just like their parents had taught them…
There’s one thing from his childhood worth mentioning in particular; something that makes Cornelius Bristol truly unique and gives reason to whom he is as a person today. Since the first day they moved into their family home in the Stamford suburbs and the second he got from the car, Cornelius came to first lay eyes on the girl next door. His heart sped up that instance, hands shaking in anxiety and knees almost buckling under his weight when his eyes met with Alison Petite’s. Their romance was instant and amicable as the two teenagers beginning at age thirteen fell head over heels for one another with their first kiss coming at that very day Cornelius moved in next door of Alison. They were inseparable from that day forward, always seen walking through life hand in hand, kissing in the hallways and lovingly gazing into eachother’s eyes. This was the kind of love books tell about, the kind of love viewed in movies by others as an example of just how beautiful a relationship between individuals can be. Cornelius and Alison were destined to be together till the end of their human lives, a couple as proof that true love really exists in this world yet time had different intends…
At seventeen Cornelius braved to ask the question every man has to make once in their life as he asked Alison to marry him and the answer came to nobody’s surprise as with tears in her eyes she said “Yes” to his request. They decided to head for Vegas and get married in one of those tiny chapels rather than endure a grand wedding with hundreds of guests simply there for the free food and drinks; their love was theirs alone, not for others to commercialize so they did what every love-crazed teenager does when head over heels for one another. Cornelius borrowed his father’s car, a white vintage corvette from 1953, picked up Alison and headed for the ride of their life, a road trip to forever remember if it hadn’t been for the unfortunate incident that waited around the corner. A joyride of lovesick teens took a dreadful toll as blinded for one second by a loving kiss the control slipped from Cornelius hands sending the classic car over the railing of the Packerville Bridge. The car sank fast and the window refused to break as the loving couple rapidly descended towards the bottom of the Mill Brooke…
The car filled up rapidly with the ice cold murky water of the Mill Brooke, oxygen slipping away with each gallon of water entering the car interior, each bubble escaping bringing the young couple closer to a watery grave. Cornelius was the first to pass out by the air depraved from his lungs only to have Alison follow just seconds later. From there on everything went blank with two young individuals fading into the twilight of the river bed beneath. Time went by, seconds becoming minutes, minutes turning to hours until those hours eventually became months that he spend in utter darkness unaware of what had happened until Cornelius awoke eleven months later in the hospital. The doctors were concerned, the couple was attempted to be reanimated five minutes of their car went across the ledge but while the boy lived the girl didn’t make it yet never would the boy remember what had happened that day. His family waited on his side patiently as he’d been in a comatose state for months from the damage that had been done; his brain had been depraved of oxygen far too long, drastic complications visualized on the hundreds of scans the doctors had made yet none could say just how severe the situation would be for the boy who lived…
Cornelius woke up but was no longer the same as the teenager that ended on the bottom of the river that day; his memory eluded him of all events prior to that day, no recollection of the girl he loved yet in his heart he experience that void he couldn’t place. The wires inside his head were all screwed up, the air absent for those seven minutes had damaged him yet with effects none could have foreseen; for each memory he’d lost, he was given something in return as Cornelius mind began to work in the most unique way. He could listen to classical music and play it on every instrument without ever having been educated in the complex art of music; he could recite every page of every book that came through his fingers and indicate the exact page and line number each quote came from as if he were a living breathing archive. His grasp of scientific understanding rapidly developed after the accident which is why the doctors suspected the development of Savant Syndrome; with everything he learned or picked up on, his memory of days before the accident seemed to fade, beginning to forget about his parents, his siblings, the girl he loved while getting smarter and more brilliant on the opposite hand. Now he reached genius status, getting transferred to Hollows where doctors seek to understand the complexity of his condition…
