Personality

Timid by nature, Nimm could be considered a prisoner of his own affliction. His shyness acts as a defense mechanism, a way to protect himself from getting hurt again. He avoids people only trusting those who’ve got his sister’s seal of approval. This makes him seem selfish, guarded and even antisocial at times but quite the opposite is true. It takes time though to get in his inner circle but once there, friends are considered family. For those few, he’ll put all on the line to ensure their happiness. Even to family, he’s never the talkative type being more of a listener than a talker anyways. He’s got some good advice though, a unique point of view on things that ‘ordinary’ people would never consider.

Other than his social awkwardness, there’s his ‘condition’ to consider. Nimm has what they call acquired Savant Syndrome due to an accident in his childhood. This has crippled him intellectually and psychologically. The result of it all, a low IQ but an inexplicable prodigious talent for Ancient Runes. Nobody but his sister understands what goes on inside his head when he stares out blankly into the distance. In many ways he slips in and out of reality, his mind drifting to the one subject it’s most comfortable with. With Ancient Runes also comes a fondness for his Norse ancestry which defined many of his ‘less obvious’ traits. Determined and stubborn he embodies those qualities that once made the Northern raiders such a threat for civilization. He’s blunt and direct and when threatened prone to physical violence.

A lot of the time Nimm is confused by human interactions, especially when complex emotions come into play. Romance in particular is a source of frustration for him. Seeing people in love, leaves him puzzled and public displays of affection just end up annoying him. Sarcasm is something he fails to understand completely, often taking jest for insult. All this leaves him feeling helpless which in turns results in anger that expresses itself in temper tantrums and sometimes violent outbursts. In moments like these, only his sister can snap him out of that rage. Nimm and Nany have that special twin bond that only grew stronger after his accident. At times a link similar to Legilimency connects them, sharing thoughts and emotions between the siblings. On Nimm’s end he can sense his sister’s emotional state...

Student type
Nimrook is what they call a savant, accursed with a low IQ but displaying an extraordinary talent for Ancient Runes. Despite his disability, he’s been able to maintain average grades through the assistance of his sister (Legilimency). While it can be considered cheating, Nimm has always made sure that his grades remained realistic enough for the ruse to remain effective. This means passing every class but only just so.

Best School Memory
Nimm’s fondest memory of Hogwarts is of the day of his DADA O.W.L. exam. Wrongly considered a simpleton by most, he barely managed to pass the written part of that exam. When asked to conjure a Patronus charm, all were ready to see him fail. And all were bitterly disappointed at the outcome. On his first attempt Nimrook produced a corporal Patronus taking on the guise of the mighty male beluga.

Worst School Memory
There are many sour memories of Hogwarts for Nimm, the bullying and mocking by his fellow classmates taking care of those but none compares to the humiliation endured during his first year. A few Slytherin students swapped his cup with a Babbling Beverage spiked with Veritaserum. For three days he couldn’t keep quiet, giving away his and his fellow students’ secrets to the world.

Personality

The first thing one must know about Nhadala is the fact that she absolutely loathes her own name. Friends and family with the exception of her brother all call her Nany; those who don’t end up on her bad side. Other than this pet peeve of hers, Nany is a cheerful gal with a bubbling personality. Everyone’s friend, she is a social butterfly who surrounds herself with positive friends who share her love for a good laugh. Family and friends are essential to her but unlike her sibling, Nany thrives in social settings. Her brother is the most important figure in her life though. Their twin bond is exceptionally strong, allowing a Legilimency-like connection between the two. Nany can actually consciously send thoughts and memories to her brother.

Compared to her brother, Nhadala will seem like your average teenager with ordinary hopes and dreams. She isn’t too ambitious, perfectly content to settle for cozy life with a husband and kids one day. Academically she’s rather gifted in those courses that take a theoretical approach towards magic. She isn’t book smart though, not bothering with blindly memorizing things. Instead Nhadala has an obsession with understanding how things work. This trait is the source of her love for puzzles and her interest in the mysterious workings of magic itself. One day perhaps she might attempt to invent a spell of her own or even try to figure out her brother’s condition. Like Nimm though, she inherited some traits from her ancestors like fierce instincts and no regard for her own safety when it comes to defending her friends and family.

But Nany is definitely not without her own flaws; at times she can be abrasive and blunt, offending people by accident in the process. When it comes to her brother, she often acts more like a mother than a sister trying to constantly keep him from harm. This makes her seem older and at times even dull compared to the average teen. Another fault adding to that perception is her bad habit to nag about the things close to her heart or the preaching to her fellow students about the mistakes they make. She’s incredibly proud as well and not unlike Nimm she can be stubborn as hell. Her worst feature however is her impulsive nature making for some rash decisions in the past such as helping Nimm cheat during their O.W.L. examinations…

Student Type
Nhadala has proved to be a gifted student, not only passing her own exams with flying colors but also relaying the necessary answers to her brother in that same time frame for a passing grade. She’s a studious witch excelling in those classes featuring a more theoretical approach to magic. For those subjects requiring talent rather than study, she ends up short at times lacking that natural finesse for applied magic.

Best School Memory
Nany can easily say that her days in Hogwarts were some of the best days in her life. The most momentous day was the first day in Study of Ancient Runes during their third year. She’d taken a seat beside her brother in the back row when the professor wrote down an untranslatable passage. Two minutes later, Nimm raised his hand and recited the phrase perfectly along with its translation. To see him finally excel in something, that made that moment so wonderful.

Worst School Memory
The school wasn’t responsible for this, merely the stage for the heartache that ruined Nany’s four year at Hogwarts. The boy she’d been seeing since her second year, a Ravenclaw by the name of Benjie drowned in the Black Lake. To make things worse, he did so in the company of another girl, a Slytherin with a reputation for promiscuity and easiness.

History

If one was to ask a hundred people to point out the Faroe Islands on a map, perhaps one would do so successfully. To make them find the tiny islet where the Faravaldyr twins were born, an impossible feat indeed as they entered the world on Koltur, one of the smallest of the Faroe islands. Their mother Linna Abels was its sole inhabitant, a placid woman content with the company of her sheep and her sheep alone. She had her reasons for living there all alone, scars from a magical past that she didn’t want the world to see. Exile seemed easier than confronting her demons and so there she remained till the day another arrived upon its shores. Eigaar Faravaldyr was a lowly fisherman whose every possession was located within the tiny 16ft yawl. His was a turbulent life of drunken brawls and loose women, a dated tribute to his Viking ancestry. If it were not for that horrifying storm, the two would never have met and yet disaster brought them together. Out at sea, Eigaar was caught unawares by a rogue wave. Thrown overboard, it was only the tide’s mercy that he washed ashore on Koltur beaten and broken by the jagged rocks that guard its coast. Linna found the man and took him in, desperately trying to mend his wounds. When common medicine failed, she fearfully decided to use magic. And magic did more than just mend the broken bones…

Three months later Linna and Eigaar took their vows upon the slopes of Cape Enniberg. There were no witnesses, no family to join the ceremony as both were ‘alone’ in this world; Eigaar banned by his family for the wicked deeds done and Linna orphaned by tragedy. And yet in their solitude they’d found one another though one could hardly call it a romantic relation. In Eigaar Linna had found a way to ease the burden of her exile on Koltur. During the healing process, she’d grown fond of his presence but the sentiment had not been mutual. For this, she resorted to magic a second time, spicing the man’s food with a daily dose of Amorentia. Three months long she laced Eigaar’s ale with the potent elixir and for three months Linna fooled herself into thinking his infatuation a true romance. Even after the wedding, she continued the doses in order to preserve their ‘love’. With time, Eigaar grew gaunt and pale, his mind intoxicated by the potion and his heart consumed by his affections for Linna. Every evening she lured him to her chamber and every night she let the Amorentia guide her man through the thralls of passion. Loneliness does strange things to a person but to keep a man prisoner and bind him to one with magic was beyond criminal. And yet who’d miss the fisherman that meant nothing but trouble for folk on the islands…

After two years Linna succeeded in her heart’s desire when she found herself pregnant of the twins. Hormones began playing tricks on her and the mood swings that accompanied this pregnancy made her lose track of the days that she was to administer Eigaar’s potion. Around the eight month, the magic’s effect began to lose its hold on the man. There were moments of clarity where he began the truth of his situation; other times even his rational mind began to confuse the induced affections for genuine feelings. There were days that he sat by Linna’s bed, listening to their unborn children and only hearing the future calling out to him. Other days he’d grow angry for what this woman had done to him but enough Amorentia remained to keep her by her side. It was only on the day of the twins’ birth that Linna revealed the truth. Her yearning for a child had made her desperate but she would not have them grow up in a lie. For that she deemed Eigaar entitled to the truth. If he chose to leave, though it would pain her, she would have it be so. But Eigaar decided to stay. Tricked into loving a woman did not sit well with him but the man would not abandon his children. They were off his blood and in the Faroe that still meant something, even to one of Faravaldyr’s bleak reputation…

The truth altered their relation but Eigaar and Linna remained husband and wife if only in name. Together they raised the children, the brazen lad Nimrook and their gentle flower Nhadala yet Eigaar did so from the deck of his new fishing yawl while Linna tended to the home on Koltur. The twins were like their father in many ways, bold of nature and prone to trouble for in their veins ran the blood of the old Vikings. One thing they did inherit from their mother was magic as both Faravaldyr siblings begun displaying such talents at a young age. Nimrook especially presented a strong affinity to magic, already performing minor spells at age five. Often the boy would set on the edge of the cliff, making pebbles levitate and dance at his whim. His sister would always be by his side, applauding her brother and egging him on to greater and more entertaining feats of wizardry. Nhadala in turn would set things on fire by accident, usually when she got angry or scared. These hiccups continued to rub their father the wrong way, as the man grew more frightful as their children began to use magic more consciously. Still Eigaar proved a good father, taking the twins out on sailing trips and showing them the wondrous world only reachable via the sea. Every month he’d show them another isle of the Faroe and every year he’d take them to see the whale migration. Upon one such trips disaster struck his boat for the second time…

Eigaar set at the tiller one quiet evening as the twins were playing on deck of the family’s boat. They’d just returned from a weeklong trip to the northern waters of Iceland where they spotted the rare Narwhal and Beluga whale. The children, now seven years old couldn’t stop talking about the expedition’s discoveries. Whales, Walrus, Penguins, they’d seen it all in those few days spend on a surprisingly calm sea. Nany and Nimm were reenacting the events of the days passed with all the reckless excitement one’d expect from six year olds. Nimm was hanging over the bow, splashing water at his sister who cried out in mock anger. Eigaar knew by now that it would make no difference whether he stepped in or not. Innocent play like this would likely end up with a brief fight but no harm was done by that. Or so the man thought as he watched his predictions unfold. Nimm kept on splashing water at his sister and now mock anger had turned into actual frustration. With a scream Nany let her brother know she had enough, but this time more than sound stirred at the call of her voice. All of a sudden the wind picked up and out of nowhere a waterspout erupted on the portside of their boat. Under the roar of the white foam, their mast broke sending the white canvas and the jig support crashing down. Nimm caught by surprise could not jump out of the way in time and took the broken mast to the head before toppling in the water…

It took three weeks of intense nursing by his mother before Nimm opened his eyes again. The boy that fell in and the boy pulled from the waters that faithful day were two entirely different people. Nimm had ever been a vibrant child, full of spirit and laughter but the boy that meekly opened its eyes was timid and dim. His sister burdened by a sense of guilt had not moved an inch away from his side through the entire process. Ever since the magically conjured waterspout, the girl had felt responsible for the accident. It were her anger that caused the waterspout after all, her doing that the mast broke and hit her poor brother on the head. At first he didn’t seem all that different, just more reclusive and tempered but soon enough they begun to realize the gravity of his injuries. The blow had left him crippled, not in body but of the mind. The magic once wielded so easily even as a child became beyond his reach and even the magical hiccups were limited to minor nuisances. Reading and writing became a daily challenge and many a times he would struggle to even keep a regular conversation going. The only thing that was strengthened by his injury, was the Legilimency bond with his sister. What used to be no different than the instinctive bond between twins, had now become a symbiotic relation that required no words. When their parents were about to give up hope on their son, Nany was the one to assure them all would be alright. And it was Nhadala who insisted to let Nimm go to Hogwarts as well when their acceptance letters arrived…

It took Nany the entire summer to convince her parents to let Nimm come along. Eigaar after the accident grew frustrated with his dimwitted son. Linna on the other hand became an over-protective mother hen constantly doting over her boy. But eventually they agreed to let the Faravaldyr twins go on together to the next chapter of their life. A chapter that began like most young witches and wizards in the magical shops of Diagon Alley. Their first stop took them to Ollivander’s where the eccentric wandmaker easily enough determined their proper match. Twins are known for their unique sibling dynamic but never before had he witnessed such a bond as the Faravaldyr’s. For that he choose two wands with an unconventional core, two Thestral hairs harvested from the same specimen. Twin wands for twin wizards, he figured. Next came the book shops, the school supplies and after an entire day of dragging their feet from one store to the next they were ready for their first day at Hogwarts. Their pets were picked up at the last possible minute when they were heading to Platform 9 ¾ . Nimm and Nany met a homeless man in the station with a box of puppies for sale, Great Danes by the look of them and like most that age, the siblings could not resist. With a pet now to accompany them on this adventure, they embarked the train and headed towards the next seven years of their life…

At Hogwarts the twins faced their first challenge because many there believed Nimm did not belong. Many, the professors included did not share in Nany’s blind faith towards her brother’s abilities. Theory was a struggle and applied magic proved challenging but together they managed to succeed in the impossible. Half the time Nany ended up writing her brother’s papers and even during the exams she’d let a few of her answers slip to Nimm’s mind along their Legilimency bond. When the brother was bullied, the sister got back at the guilty party. When the sister grew tired, her brother would be there to comfort her. This was the strength of the Faravaldyr twins. Only in their third year did folks discover Nimm’s talent because the day he sat down in the Study of Ancient Runes, was the day he truly exceeded expectations. With ease the simpleton translated the most complex of rune scriptures, discovering the meaning of symbols that eluded generations. His sister on the other hand fell some of the burden slip from her shoulders, allowing her to breathe easy for the first time. From that year on she only assisted Nimm during exams and finals. From that year on, Nany was able to truly reveal her academic brilliance, excelling in all classes with a theoretic approach to magic…

A personal tragedy befell Nany during her fourth year at Hogwarts, an accident that to this day she deemed not-so-accidental. While most knew her as the social butterfly and guardian angel of her dimwitted brother, she’d kept one affair close to her heart and away from the public’s judging eye. In her second year she’d met a dashing Ravenclaw wizard by the name of Benjie Prince. One year higher than her, Benjie was the only one who understood her struggle, having a Squid young brother himself. In sympathy they’d found one another and easily enough their friendship blossomed into something special. A first kiss shared on Christmas eve in the second-floor corridor, a dance cherished beneath the great pendulum of the Clock Tower. In secrecy they’d shared these wondrous moments with only a few in the castle entrusted with their fairytale romance. That all came to an abrupt end when Kelley Pucey entered the great hall screaming and crying upon that gloomy April afternoon. Nany never learnt the details of what had happened but rumors circled the castle about the accident. It seemed Kelley had tempted Benjie to go skinny-dipping with her in the Black Lake. It had all supposed to have been an innocent enough prank but when Grindylows attacked. What was supposed to be just a ‘grab cloths and ditch’ joke proved fatal for Nany’s Ravenclaw boyfriend who washed ashore two days later. Nimm was there during the grieving process though of little help. Complex emotions such as a grieve and heartache ever baffled the emotionally stinted lad…

During their fifth year the greatest test of their talents awaited when the Ordinary Wizarding Levels were around corner. Nany could pass those blindfolded by the standardized tests of Hogwarts were deemed foolproof even for the most powerful witches and wizards. None had been able to cheat on these since the late 19th century. Nimm would never be able to pass all those exams, not with his condition hindering him on every class subject but Ancient Runes. So for an entire year they began to work on a plan. Every night they would study together, translating entire book chapters to Ancient Runes for Nimm to remember. Every weekend they would further explore their unique bond, establishing the Legilimency link to become more practical. When the time of their OWL’s arrived, the Faravaldyrs were ready for the first successful cheating since 1896. For all written exams, Nany would allow Nimm to glimpse certain segments of her own paper via Legilimency using Ancient Rune codes that would let Nimm fill in the blanks on his own accord. During the practical tests, the weekend exercises proved a fruitful enterprise as Nimm managed to score decent results. Only during the Patronus Charm bonus points inquiry did both Faravaldyrs surprise all. Nimm was the first to produce a corporal Beluga Patronus big enough to fill nearly half the Great Hall. Next Nany repeated his success with a dazzling display of a Narwhal Patronus as both used the memory of their family whale spotting trips as inspiration for the magic…

With their OWL’s now far behind them, Nimm and Nany are looking forward to their sixth year attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Nany decided on enrolling in almost every NEWT class available for her previous curriculum with the exception of Potions while continuing her work in Magical Theory. Nimm on the other hand had to repeat two OWL grade classes while ditching almost all other courses. Herbology, DADA and evidently Ancient Runes were the only classes he was accepted in for NEWT level education, the last one having been with a perfect score the year before. In addition Nimm decided to join the extra-curricular Ancient Studies class hoping to learn more from the civilizations that first created the Ancient Runes. Now only the future can tell what’s in store for them but one can be certain that they’ll face those challenges together…
